I Need a Diet Buddy

I am feeling very discouraged. I won't quit because in my present situation, quitting is just not an option for me.

I stuck very carefully to my Nutrisystem diet, which must be a permanent diet for me.

The first week I lost weight. Now it's the 2nd week and...the scale shows I gained 6/10 of a lb.!

I've really been good about this, ignoring all temptations except for drinking 1/2 glass of milk a couple of nights ago at 3AM when I couldn't sleep. Sure that milk wasn't why I gained more than half a lb.

And I was not lazy this last week by any means; yesterday, I weeded my whole garden. I have been active though I haven't started swimming yet because the pool here is not heated and I have arthritis. That will start this week when the temperature warms up.

I need some encouragement. People have yelled at me, lectured me and scorned me over my weight for years. I am surely doing my best strictly adhering to a low calorie low glycemic index diet. Nutrisystem worked well for me years ago and I kept the weight off for years. Then last year I got very sick and was bedridden for a year and a half. Now I have gained back about half the weight I lost years ago...very discouraging. I can barely walk and I am highly motivated to lose the weight and gain more stamina.

Anyone out there struggling?

yes. i struggle. daily. and i know that the reasons you want to lose weight are almost more important than the plan you use.

but i'd love to be an accountability buddy! :)
i could really use one.

@Labyrinth: OK. Thanks. I don't have a huge, amount of trouble sticking to the actual diet. My problems are:
1. Getting discouraged because it takes so long and because weight fluctuates. Once, I gave up when the scale did not budge for six weeks. Months later, I figured out that some dust had gotten into the scale mechanism and the scale was broken, stuck at one weight! By that time, I'd gained back what little I'd lost when the scale stuck!
2. Social situations, especially ones where people push food on you. ("Come on! Just one piece won't hurt you! You can diet tomorrow! It's Jane's birthday and we're all having a piece! Aunt Milly baked it herself from her special recipe!") And, of course, holidays.

sure! those life things can really be difficult.

what kind of support are you looking for? :)
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Labyrinth: Tell me what you are doing and how it's going. Message every week or so and when the going gets tough. I am feeling bad today because I was careful but the scale didn't reflect my efforts.

@greenmountaingal: i'm on a Keto eating plan. i have at least 10 lbs to lose. I walk between 8000-10000 steps 5-6 days/week. I do yoga 3+/week. I have lower back injuries so cannot do anything high impact.

my scale went up 1 from the weekend - as i did indulge a little by having a Navajo taco at the powwow. and probably not enough water. my rings are tight today.

@Labyrinth: Do you live in the American southwest? I am in the Mojave Desert in California.

@greenmountaingal: i'm in Colorado
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Labyrinth: Nice. I've been wanting to visit Colorado Springs for years because it has the world's biggest swimming pool!

What is a keto diet?

Also, have you struggled with your weight for a long time? I've been obese off and on since my middle years when I began taking care of my elderly parents. They're gone now but the weight has remained. I lost most of it about 8 years ago and kept it off until I got sick. I am determined to do whatever it takes. Fasting doesn't work well for me; I get sick and dizzy.

@greenmountaingal: i got up to 290 before the birth of my first child in 2000. i have struggled Constantly since that time.

Recently my husband suffered from and died of cancer. i lost a Lot of weight during the time he was on hospice. i just couldn't eat. i was very unhealthy. at one point after he left, i looked in the mirror and cried at how horrible i looked.

i've been 'depression eating' since that time and have steadily crept back up. and i really don't want that.

@Labyrinth: I understand. I am sorry about your husband. Stress can effect weight more than anything.

I have decided to add mini-fasting to my eating plan. That means allowing 15 hours to elapse between dinner and breakfast. Example: Dinner at 6PM, breakfast at 9AM.
Labyrinth · 51-55, F
@greenmountaingal: yes. stress is huge and plays a huge part. and probably you stressing about the scale not moving is counterproductive. :)
Labyrinth · 51-55, F
@greenmountaingal: what is the point of 'mini fasting'?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Labyrinth: Studies show that allowing 15 hours to go by between dinner and breakfast can take off weight even without dieting...and it can help a diet work better.
Labyrinth · 51-55, F
@greenmountaingal: wow! i did not know that. Thank you.

have you tried Apple Cider Vinegar?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
@Labyrinth: Yes. Didn't think it helped much. But I am about to make a tonic from a recipe and its basic ingredient is apple cider vinegar. The tonic is for clearing up viral infections. It includes garlic, horseradish, ginger and several herbs.

Yes!!! That's a wonderful detox blend.
