"if only if only"

A story I think of daily, from the book not the movie,

"if only if only", the woodpecker sighs, "the bark on the tree were as soft as the skies",

while the wolf waits below, hungry and lonely,

he cries to the moon, "if only if only".

I remember hearing the first part and not knowing the second got AGES and I was always taught, "He cries to the MooOooon, "if only, if only."

Never quite understood what it was meant to mean. What do you think?

Reminds me of another inexplicable bit of nonsense I learned from my grandpa,

"Listen, listen; the cat's a' pissin'
Where, where?
Under the chair
Quick, quick! Get yer gun!
Ah shit he's all done."

@Doomflower it means that we all wish for something, not knowing the toll of our wish. everything is relative to ourselves. the woodpecker wishes for the tree to be soft, so he can eat. the wolf wishes for meat/woodpecker, so he can eat. both cry to the moon, for ultimately the same thing. who should be rewarded??

If only? It is a question posed to you...if only.....? The rest is up to you..(;
