I Got The Cane Or Slipper In The Sixth Form

We were all making a lot of noise waiting for the teacher to arrive. When he did, he just went straight to his desk, opened the drawer and extracted his "slipper" - a large plimsoll. He called us all out, about a dozen of us, boys and girls, and told us to form a queue. Then, one by one, we had to step forward and bend over for six hard smacks across our arses. Sitting at our desks was quite uncomfortable.

How old were you at the time? Your account highlights so succinctly just how casual corporal punishment could be in those days. I have a story so similar it could be plagiarised! We were waiting for one of our 'softie' teachers to turn up for the lesson - she never could say boo to a goose, so we didn't care. But she must have been away that day because the school martinet turned up. Probably more than half the class were actually at their desks, but a group of us - around 10 - were gathered around desk at the back of the room having hysterics over something. Like you, we were called out, and in front of the rest of the class, we each had to touch our toes for six real hard ones with the size 100 (or so it felt) plimsoll.

My point is that we just treated it as a normal part of school life. No parents came charging to the school to complain. In fact none of us would have been stupid enough to tell our parents - given the strong probability of a repeat dose at home.

@GailCob You are so right - nobody ever complained - it was just part of normal school life. In fact some teachers used to give us a choice of 3 with the slipper or detention. Not many girls chose detention!

@Rebecca54 Some teachers gave us that choice, especially in 6th form. I don't know of anyone, boy or girl, opting for detention.

16, we'd just started 6th form.

@Rebecca54 Mine was for leaving the premises at lunchtime without permission to go to the pub with some other girls and boys. They didn't know about the going to the pub bit. I was wearing a skirt so I got it on my knickers. The other girls were too. It wasn't the first time but on previous occasions we'd just been slippered by the teacher who saw us or, in a couple of cases, just told off. This time we were all caned by our year head.

I was caned twice in the 6th form, first for truancy and second for being rude to a visiting speaker @Sharon

I remember the slipper well. The detention alterative was usually getting into the black school pilmsollls and shorts for extra PT, Very embarrassing but I like wearing them now1

@Sharon Hi Sharon, am I right in thinking you got the slipper at school but just accepted it as part of the culture back then? At my boys school in London we often had choices like that... detention or the cane or slipper! I was once sent off (unfairly) in a school football match and was given the choice of a 3-match suspension (letting the team down) or a dozen with the cane. I chose the cane... so I was a hero with a sore bottom! But I didn't think it was so casual or cut-and-dried with girls. Where did you go to school?

@naughtyschoolboy None of us thought anything of getting the slipper, it was what we expected if we got caught misbehaving. Girls and boys were treated equally and I was often slippered or caned with boys.

@Sharon we had the same view of the slipper and strap at my all boys school, just a fact of life.
