I Am Cynical

I am cynical, but I have not yet given up hope. What do I mean then when I say that I am cynical?
It means that I have hope that things will get better.., but don't expect them to. Not in the least.

Many people look down upon us cynics. They call us defeatists. But I don't think so. I am not defeated. I am simply predicting the evetual outcome.
It doesn't mean that I won't try to change it.

I guess I'm just not comfortable with lying to myself, and that's kinda what optimism seems like to me. It seems naive.
After all, my cynicism has served me well so far. It is all too often proven right.

I'm not saying that fairytale endings do not exist, but I'm saving myself the disappointment of thinking that I'll get one.

A lot of people falsely believe that optimism is the only right and constructive mental attitude, or at least the preferred one over pessimism, cynicism, and nihilism. They tend to call us defeatists, because they can't seem to relate to, or appreciate, our way of critical thinking. It's no wonder that pessimistic people are generally seen as the more intelligent ones. In some ways it's also a coping mechanism for me. When you do not automatically expect a positive outcome, you're less likely to become disappointed when things don't go your way.
