What’s Your Secret Ingredient When Making Homemade Chili?

A good amount of ginger, helps with digestion and adds a very subtle flavor.
a touch of cocoa powder
@Mamapolo2016 the best chili recipe I ever made had baking cocoa in it
@Mamapolo2016 I’ll have to try that 😊👍🏼
@cherokeepatti Depends on how much chili you're making. I'd start with a teaspoon and taste.
SW-User
A little coffee, dark chocolate and cinnamon mix

@SW-User all that combined would trigger heartburn something fierce for me. The ginger helps with the chili spices. I can’t even drink a single cup of chocolate-flavored coffee without it triggering heartburn.
Cumin .. and a bit of dark chocolate
Living in Florida I don't get much od a chance to make proper chili, but last time I roasted a variety of peppers spicy to sweet the chopped them up and added them... Turned out decent

Chocolate and masa harina. The type of chiles you use, (dried Poblanos), also makes a lot of difference.

@4meAndyou I use a bit of cornmeal to thicken the chili.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
For my world-famous vegetarian three-bean chilli I add a healthy dollop of hot salsa.

@hunkalove what types of beans do you use?
greenmountaingal · 70-79, F
Great idea, ginger. I'll try it next time.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@greenmountaingal I started craving ginger when I was first showing signs of having rheumatoid arthritis almost 30 years ago. I had it every day in some form for many years. It also helps with digestion and keeps my stomach from getting so inflamed from eating spicy foods.
Cinnamon, I use about 1/2 a teaspoon 😊
