How do you react when someone hurts you badly?

I just have an overwhelming urge to hurt them back. It’s a terrible part of me and one that I try to fight every time but it doesn’t always work out.

I usually act as if I don't care.
And part of me becomes cold.

I've tried to treat them like they did to me, but I can't for long cause it's just not my nature..
