I do look for common ground, like quantum physics. If there are no stories I don't bother. However if there are some normal stories I add. It isn't a marriage proposal, they just want to follow your post, assuming there is reason to do so.

That's one way of looking at it. Unless the profile looks crazy or perverse, I'm happy to add back. I think of it like a symbolic hand in friendship. It doesn't do any harm to me or my profile.
