I used to think it was just a number, until I got older and watched my parents be on such different levels (17 years apart. Mom was 17 dad was 34 when they started dating). Now someone I'm with was with a woman 13 years older than him and they too were on such different levels. She had children 5-6 years older than him and in turn treated him like a child instead of significant other.
Not saying it doesn't work out for other people though :) I just couldn't imagine it for myself anymore. I'd stop at anything over 7 years older than myself.

@punkkitten I also used to think it was just a number when I was younger. I'd always use the issue of maturity not being based on age because I wanted to be taken seriously. But truth be told, age can be just a number but more often than not, it contributes more to society and relationships than just being the number of birthdays you've had.
