I Am Done With One Sided Friendships

This is my greatest weakness. I kept falling for it, being taken advantage of. It was a huge breakthrough for me to realize what was going on and that no amount of "trying harder" was going to get those people to do anything for me.

My eyes are open to it now, and I often catch myself before I fall into an old bad habit. But there are a couple of lady friends who still can get me to jump when they call. It's a little embarrassing. But I have gotten better in asking for and expecting a little reciprocity. Rather than volunteering to be a doormat.

Hmmm ... what is being asked of you? And what are you looking for in return?

@sarabee1995 Mostly the one sided relationships are where I do all the work. Sometimes that's emotionally. I'm dropping everything to listen to the drama, giving advice, etc. But, there's never any reciprocal interest, no way for me to get a word in edgewise. Other times, its real labor. Doing favors, fixing things, editing resumes, etc.

What do I want in return? Just the feeling that the other person cares. An email that doesn't end with an "I need something."

[@sarabee1995 ] I have a desire to be seen as helpful that gets me into these situations.

@76starships Ah, I see. I understand. Sorry you're experiencing that.
Try to develop a sense of this type of person early on. Watch for cues; and then pass them by. There are enough people around who are not like that.
I can relate. Now once I feel that I'm entering a one sided friendship I just turn my back and get out.
