I Am Spanish

One of the unexpected consequences of the Catalonian independence referendum happening today is that many people are losing their shame to show the national flag in balconies or windows. So far, it only used to happen when the national soccer team was playing some competition.

Even on our National Day, 12th October, few people showed them, and those who did risked to be called far-right and fascist (stupid beyond words, I know).

I am not fond of public displays of political beliefs apart from discussions, but I am thinking of showing it this year.

Do it. You will feel good. And you guys were always against independent Kosovo, so you have our moral support

Expression in what you believe in is an important form of communicating your voice. Do it bro. I saw news headlines about a referendum in Spain, but as curious as I was I actually ignored reading from the news hoping you come on here express your point of view. That’s why we are so much alike, we have strong patriotic views about our homes and love to express it in discussion.

@SW-User This is a summary of what I think

I would have a better opinion about Catalonian independence if one of the main motivations behind was not purely economical, their desire not to transfer money to less developed areas in Spain. And if they had not brainwashed people using tv and educational systems telling them that Spaniards are uncouth people, fascists and oppressors.

@Cierzo I just had to read that previous post you referenced, that’s a very good point of view, and that’s a good example of what goes on behind closed doors in the political world, and how mass brainwash from TV and misinformation can have persuasive and distracting effect to the blind eyes. By saying that standing up against unfair laws is one thing but breaking the unfair law is criminal you are right about that, because one who does is no better than the criminal who breaks so many laws to impose that unfair law.

@SW-User I am quite sick of those who carelessly quote Gandhi or Thoreau to support disobeying the law.

Gandhi and Thoreau were sent to prison for defending their views, and accepted it, they knew it was the personal price to pay, and part of their fight.

Catalonian leaders who have been fined (nobody has been sent to prison yet), like the former Catalonian president, have asked for help to pay them. Such are their freedom fighters

If you feel it you should do it..

@SW-User I will listen to my heart when the date comes. Let's see what happens until them.

Spain actually was in our news this morning! Kind of shocking. Are you safe?
Cierzo · M
@JustNik Totally safe. In fact, only a few incidents have happened in Barcelona, but I guess media will portrait them like 'awful police brutality'.
JustNik · 51-55, F
@Cierzo that's why I asked. LOL They like to find the worst picture possible and make it sound worse yet. Glad to know you're safe! 👍
