I Am Spanish

On October 1st there will be a referendum for independence in Catalonia. First things first, that referendum is illegal. Spanish conatitution does not give their territories the chance to secede. Unfair? Maybe, but the law is the law.

Those who fight to change an unfair law deserve respect. Those who just break it are criminals who deserve to be punished. That's what the Catalonian government is doing, just using a forceful position based on the amount of people in demonatration, oblivious than a large amount does not equal being right.

Personally, I would give Catalonia their referendum and the independence if the majority of Catalonians vote so. Facing all the consequences of their decision. Moving out of EU and euro, and with Spain vetoing any chance of re-entering it. Imposing border controls. Double nationality would not be accepted, those living in Catalonia should choose, and those opting to be Catalonians would lose their right to get any pensions from the Spanish government.

(By the way, oppressed Catalonia has its own parliament, police, and citizens have no restrictions at all to use Catalan language. On the other hsnd, parents who want their kids to be taught in Spanish at school face trouble, and owners who refuse to label their businesses in Catalan face fines reaching thousands of euro)

@dunpender I don't see violence either. It's not being driven by overt poverty and overwhelming corruption.

@Ynotisay There is a high number of people claiming for independence. Also a big number rejecting it. I am in favour of negotiations for a legal serious referendum. Having clear who is able or not to vote. Knowing that whatever the result is, there will not be a second chance for any side. And most important, with a clear plan of what will happen next day if the vote for independence wins.

@dunpender The situation of Scotland and Catalonia is not the same. Scotland and England were independent kingdoms who decided (put quotations if you want) to merge in the past, but leaving the door open for separation. Catalonia was never an independent kingdom.

I support a political solution, with a negotiation, and an agreed referendum after solving issues like what happens with Catalonian debt towards Spanish government.

@dunpender Catalonia is by far the highest indebted region in Spain. Yes, their part in Spanish GDP is high, around 20% of Spanish GDP, but Catalonian national debt reaches 75.000 million euro, and two thirds of it is owed to the Spanish government.
Catalonian public debt emissions are ranked really low by Moody's, S&P and the like.

@dunpender So you agree with the EU being a German reich?
