I Have Worked In The Hells Of Customer Service

You really learn to hate people when working in this industry. I have the utmost respect for waiters, shop-assistants, call-center operators and anyone who has to serve me.

Incredibly difficult work. Keeping that smile plastered on your face when inside you’re wishing they’d fall off a cliff...... not easy.

My experience with customer service (phone rep) was almost the opposite. Although it is true that there are some very horrible people out there, I found 85% of the people I helped to be delightful. When you find such people, and when you can really help, it becomes your joy to help them.

@4meAndyou With respect, it may have been that those 85% had worked in the industry too and could relate to your job. Perhaps the nature of your Call Center job wasn't negative. From working as a telephony advisor for an Energy Supplier in the UK, customers were always shouting at me - both directly and indirectly. No-one enjoys calling-up about their gas and electric bill. However when you do provide good customer service and appreciation is extended to you, it does make you feel good. Otherwise people take you for granted.

@Plaxton 85% of our customers had most definitely NOT worked in customer service previous to speaking with me. I worked for a telephone company, two health insurance companies, and a retail supplier. What I found, especially for the phone company, was that people were terribly upset when they called, and happy as clams after they had spoken to me.
