I Love My Son

The last thing any parent expects is to lose a child. To be able to watch them grow to the fullest before you yourself dies. We cannot expect anyone to feel exactly the same, but to me, I felt as though a part of my heart had died with him.

As some of you know, I am unable to have any children of my own by birth. I am a "surrogate" or a "foster" parent, but I love all of them as though they truly are my own. These kids know they can come to me for anything in the world. That I am here, and that at times, I feel as though it's the one reason I am here.

Not just to make wetsuits, or to make quilts, or to be a writer. But to guide the kids who don't already have all the support in their lives. Parents are working, parents are single, parents aren't well. There are so many reasons these kids need someone else in their lives.

Somehow, it turned out to be me. There are/were 7 of them, and amongst them 10 grandchildren, and another on the way.

What he needed the most was someone to talk to. His father was abusive, and his mother was hardly around, due to working two jobs. He needed a place to hang out, and someone to trust implicitly. When he was in school, he'd come over to do his homework, to watch tv, and sometimes to eat dinner. He played the guitar and drums. He enjoyed hiking through the woods and camping. He enjoyed bon fires on the beach. And like me, he enjoyed writing.

He was a fine young man, and I will miss him terribly.

To your life and legacy; fine young men and women, forever in your debt.
Better for having known the soul, who could never give too much.

You were a comfort, a strength; their enduring place of peace.

We celebrate these lives resplendent; who owe you all they are.

His life, we remember. The fine young man as none was honored,
to call you mother, mentor - friend.
Remember him smilingly.
I hear the departed souls are much better placed that way in their journey forth.
