I Am A Strict Parent

My 10 year old asked me a question today. She asked if she could get a cell phone. I told her I would think about it. But I'm not really sure she is ready for a phone. I'm sure she is getting this from her friend's and her boyfriend. I think I was 11 or 12 when I got my first cell. What you guy's think

Might as well give a 10 year old girl a phone if you let her have a boyfriend. She will need it to call for help when she she is going down that slippery slope.

Just a basic phone without camera or internet or texting would be the only phones I would ever give a kid and would lock it to only being able to call or receive calls from preloaded numbers of family or emergency services.

I would get yourself a second cell phone (flip phone woould be good) and allow her to use it from time to time as a reward .. .. .. something she earns and has but restricted or controlled so she can learn how to use it without it controlling her life .. .. instead of facing the negative of looosing her phone when she makes a mistake or misbehaves .. you are promoting poaitive behaviour .. ..

BTW .. My youngest two shared their first cell phone for a couple of years .. ..

@Venus25: I'm sure you know your daughter best and sounds like you know how to be a great parent .. .. .. depending on your carrier you may be able to monitor her use online or in the bill .. .. .. I remember my youngest became grumpy and tired and it continued for a couple three weeks .. .. wben I checked she was using her PC at 1, 2 and even 3 am . . .

I think it really depends on how responsible she is, some girls I say 13, some could handle the responsibility at 9
10 yr olds, by definition, are not old enough to be introduced to the nightmare of the brave new digital world. https://similarworlds.com/2327115-I-Am-A-Strict-Mom/696716-The-other-day-I-mentioned-that-I-was-considering
In my opinion -- absolutely not!!!!! This is a no brainer for me. There is growing strict parenting on both what I will call the cultural left and cultural right --which have some differences, but not on this issue.

I was considering letting my thirteen yr old get one and decided against it: https://similarworlds.com/2327115-I-Am-A-Strict-Mom/696716-The-other-day-I-mentioned-that-I-was-considering

If you must fuel this situation(which is gonna turn bad unless there is serious parental intervention --ten yr olds should not be "dating" -- it's not "cute" -- it's disgusting) that is the best suggestion.

I bf at 10? Is it just puppy love? If she's mature enough it might be good for her to have a phone if she needs to call you for something
the silly bf thing needs to discouraged -- period. I am kind of surprised that this whole situation could develop -- Venus25 seems to be a rather traditional and and strict parent. But, I get the impression it might be time for some serious parental clean up before the whole larger situation festers -- which is really easy in our culture.

@beckychandler; Not sure I would call her a "traditional and strict parent" if she is letting her 10 year old have a boyfriend and then needs to ask on here if she should get her a phone. Hope she teaches her about protecting herself from this boyfriend.

Sadly I got mine at 16
why sadly? Do you think that caused you lasting harm. I am seriously interested because this is an issue in my family.
@beckychandler: no i wanted responsibility at an early age
