I Like Philosophy

Ethics must be applied universally or not at all. You cannot be said to be ethical if you pick and choose where you apply said ethics. If you believe that the initiation of force against another is wrong, and yet you have no qualms about robbing your neighbor, you cannot claim to be ethical.

However...

For ethics to have any merit, they must be shared.

If you behave ethically towards a person, but they respond with unethical behavior (they assault or rob you, for example), you are under no obligation to continue to behave ethically towards them. For example, it would be perfectly fine to take your property back from them without their consent.

Ethics or moral philosophy is a branch of philosophy that involves systematizing, defending, and recommending concepts of right and wrong conduct. The term ethics derives from the Ancient Greek word ἠθικός ethikos, which is derived from the word ἦθος ethos (habit, "custom"

Yeah, actually it is

But let's not have a rational discussion about the subject. Hurling insults is much more fun

@Alchemy5150: philosophy is the study of THOUGHT by DEFINITION......historically in western philosophy - after socrates, plato , aristotle and alexander the great we have a HUGE gap known as "the dark ages"....even Renaissance philosphers like descartes and voltaire never tabled "ethics" in their considerations......
aristoltle had arguably THE most deductive argument outside of theoretical mathematics known as his "theory of causality" reads much like the butterfly effect - EXCEPT....he originated it in near perfect form......HUNDREDS of years later descates "i think therefore i AM" is about as far as any arguable theory goes philosophically.......and THAT quote is poignant mostly in that it's VERY insightful - yet far from conclusive..........ethics has NEVER been a component in the philosophical discussion....never will be either...
Alchemy5150 · 41-45, M
Sorry, but ethics are nothing more than moral philosophy, which is a key component in many philosophical branches.

sorry, but your a mis-informed fool.....i can find flat earth evidence on the internet too - doesn't make the earth flat....

Ethics is NOT philosophy - thats why its called "ethics"
Alchemy5150 · 41-45, M
Truly mystifying 😑

Ethics are a branch of philosophy called Moral Philosophy.

Where is the disconnect here???
yllacsar · 46-50, M
People who like to pretend they are intellectuals might like to PRETEND that ethics is a philosophical debate

Lol so...Objectivism, Utilitarianism, Pragmatism, Consqeuentialism etc were all the products of people who just wanted to wanted others to think they were smart. Of course this would include Aristotle who was the author of Nicomachean Ethics.

Nope. Ethics have nothing to do with philosophy at all...because you say so.
okaybut · 56-60, M
@yllacsar Hmmm...I imagine you have not read any moral philosophy...you idiot. It is one of the central themes of Philosophy and Myth...the consequences or our thoughts and actions.
