Whats wrong with these headphones ?

I have ilive headsets it won't automatically connect to my phone I have to use a headphone jack. I got bluetooth on my phone I got a Samsung Galaxy it won't connect to my ipod either. The headsets are 5 or 6 years old and my ipod and phone are kind of new I dont know if that's the problem or what's going on. My brother in law has TCL phone he can get his headset to automatically connect without a jack they're the same as I got. Why won't mine connect to my devices automatically ? How can I get them set up to where they'll connect ?
