Have you ever had a work frienemy?

I've recently started working at a custom fabrication shop. My father began teaching me how to weld when I was 9. At 13 I was quite proficient in Mig, Tig, Stick and Flux cored. Its not rocket science. I've 26 months active experience from a previous employer, a good work ethic and a solid reference.

But unlike the easy going camaraderie of previous work mates...only female there as well; a few these new guys kinda wanna be all condescending, sexist a basically jerk wads.

I've no thin skin. I can talk shit with the best of them. But its like....damn. Clock out an Im ready to escape. 🤷‍♀️

that’s so bad ass that you can weld!
You have welder qualifications and certs?
Show them who is boss by tracking heat no. of materials, knowing domestic and non-domestic forms of steel, have everything categorized and organized in your head!
When you are asked a question always be prepared to give it.
V cool of you, welding of all forms is an awesome skill set to have.
My first time welding I didn’t wear a welders mask and I was working on a very large project for Mickey Mouse that had to get done before opening and my welder scheduled that night got into an accident.
I stepped in to ensure the project would get done and my welds were awful but somehow my weld inspector passed it, I think because of all the prep work I did and it was non-structural, the park was able to open in time safely but I ended up feeling like I had sand paper in my eyes for a week. 🤣

@SW-UserCertainly. AWS D1 and 3G MIG. Basically a custom fab. shop that creates architectural elements. Aluminum. I Mig those products they fabricate prior to finishing and powder coating. Repetitive really.

Very cool you were part of a Disney project. I really withed I could have been on the crew building that Millennium Falcon replica there. And indeed I've Arc Eye too. 😎

@Trippin haha I managed a lot of the build and custom fabrication for all of Star Wars land. Was fun. I am in the same trade

It's tough, we had a female painter in the workshop, there was comment after comment, customers the worst if honest. A girl painted my car?! What on earth? You have to show her to me, I'll add not her exquisite skills but her. Pathetic. Best painter we had as well that girl.
Even though she knew she was good it knocked her confidence
Trippin · F
@Gangstress Damn... Sucks. Like this ever present hurdle simply based upon my gender. 🤷‍♀️
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@Trippin it makes no sense to me, if you're good, what does it matter. Idiots sweet, kill em with ya skills girl
Trippin · F
@Gangstress Thank you... Needed that. ❤️
Feel for you

Dont let the adverse behavior shape you. ... you have good core focus

Use the challenge to improve you

Transform their rude into your precision ... and your efficiency

Work product will shut them up.
Trippin · F
@questionWeaver Good stuff, sir... Thank you. Just kinda bummed I guess. ❤️
@Trippin I can see being disappointed ... you are of bright eyes and a good heart

Do not let bad apples jade you

Vent frequently

They sound like idiots, they're miffed you're so good at this job.

Hopefully in time they will cop onto themselves and stop being so stupid
Trippin · F
@SW-User Previously, I was able to joke with co workers. As a woman I used that to my advantage and say slick comments right back that they couldn't. We became buds. These dudes like... Hard core pretending to accept but really...not nice underneath. 🤷‍♀️ Ill get over it. I just needed to rat them out to yall...lol
SW-User
@Trippin ugh, they sound awful.. They don't like change I bet.. And yeah talk to us and laugh at them here, just ignore the fools
Trippin · F
@SW-User Kinda like a Boys Club atmosphere. Plus is I get my own restroom.... Haters!! Haha
senghenydd · M
The world is full of odd-balls, mis-fits, and horrible people they are everywhere it's not surprising you've met a few, trouble is in the work place it's difficult to block them out.
Trippin · F
@senghenydd Indeed. I don't judge. But I do need to make a living. Keep all that bullshit at home...or to yourself when you click in. 🤷‍♀️
I'm dealing with friend betrayal right now. This place has fallen apart in just a few days. He is vulgar to the women and he is always yelling at us for any little thing. Our problem is he is from another country and we have to be nice. We were called into a meeting last night and yelled at because he says he has been threatened and bullied. My friend that has gone into administration has stood inside a window and lisened to us talk and reported back to the top admin😠
Trippin · F
@mondayschild2 Damn... That sucks. Id never run an tell on anyone unless like some physical Shit or something. Hang in there. ❤️
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
It never mattered to me who it was, as long as they can do the job
Trippin · F
@vetguy1991 As it should be.
Freeranger · M
Had to amend my answer as a qualifier. Back when I worked at the shipyard, I knew a few. It's part of the industrial mind and package.
I could say alotta shit about that. I would start with, "no surprises there." Of course, lots more could be said at the sad state of affairs it portends.

I will stop there.
Trippin · F
Ive had workplaces where i felt isolated and happy to get out of there. That's rough for sure. Hopefully it isn't a full-time gig where you will be around these people for years. that is unsustainable, as i found out.
Trippin · F
@BiasForAction Such a challenge to like...get psyched up in such a negative atmosphere for sure 🤷‍♀️
Rambler · M
Unfortunately, gaining years of work experience usually includes experience in dealing with a- holes. Some things don't change.
Trippin · F
@Rambler Kinda sucks right?! 🤷‍♀️
Rambler · M
@Trippin Yeah it surely does . A wise lady I once worked with told me that "work is just a crow fight" and I remembered that. :)
Trippin · F
@Rambler Ha... Now I will. Great analogy 🤔
SW-User
Is there anyone in management you can talk to? It's sad you have to put up with that when you are so talented and hard-working 😕
Trippin · F
@SW-User Eh... I see your point and appreciate your vibe... But... I sorta have never been one to " wake waves" ? Doin' so then Im " that" person. Just bummed and needed to vent really. 🤷‍♀️ But thank you for your advice ❤️
They probably just want to be better then you. Hate jobs where it's clock in clock out and avoid everything
Trippin · F
@Justafantasy Yeah... Time tables like those just suck. 🤷‍♀️
toddr13 · 46-50, M
I agree that I’d focus on work and let that speak for itself. I’m not saying to ignore their attitudes, but karma can come for them when you’re advancing and perhaps moving to a better opportunity in the industry. You have skills that threaten their small-mindedness, and that they don’t realize that women can work in the same field.
Moonpenny · F
Jealousy 🤷🏼‍♀️
Trippin · F
@Moonpenny Well.... Its really not even performance geared. I weld well. But more so the whisper mill, the comments and shit. IDK... Im just pissed...lol
Moonpenny · F
@Trippin Ah, feel for ya!
Pretzel · 61-69, M
sorry you're having to deal with jerks
DDonde · 31-35, M
Kind of. They get along with me enough, but I dislike her. But we're both the senior members of the shift so we both have a mutual understanding that we both know what's going on.
Trippin · F
@DDonde Interesting.... Least things are open and mutually understood perhaps.
MethDozer · M
They'll ask a favor one day.....
