I Took Magic Mushrooms

I spent two years in Costa Rica teaching high school at an American school.

Costa Rica has a six month dry season, followed by a six month rainy season. By the end of the dry season, everything around San Jose - the plateau as well as the surrounding hills - are all brown. Every small gust of wind brings dirt devils.

Within a week of the rainy season beginning, the surrounding hills are all bright green and verdant. A few of the teachers - myself included - would go up into the hills. Finding cow pastures, we would pluck psilocybin mushrooms from the cow patties.

We would bring these back to town, where the wife of one of the teachers would brew tea from the mushrooms, which she would then store.

Once a month or so on a Sunday, five or six of us would go to their house. There, we would all drink a large glass of the tea with some lemon. Knowing that it was going to take about an hour before we felt the psilocybin tea, we would then smoke a joint or two to tide us over.

Unlike the marijuana, the effects of the tea would last for hours, resulting in a wonderfully splendiferous, creative, and imaginative afternoon.

As evening approached, and we were once again able to safely venture forth, we would happily wend our tired way home.

A most remarkable and wonderful time was had by all!
