Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

You know a song is gonna be great - and was probably written with the use of at least one mind altering substance - when even the person who wrote it doesn't even know what it's about...

Well I dreamed I saw the knights in armor coming
Saying something about a queen.
There were peasants singing and drummers drumming
And the archer split the tree.
There was a fanfare blowing to the sun
That was floating on the breeze;
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the nineteen seventies.
Look at Mother Nature on the run
In the nineteen seventies.

I was lying in a burned out basement
With the full moon in my eye;
I was hoping for replacement
When the sun burst through the sky.
There was a band playing in my head
And I felt like getting high.
I was thinking about what a friend had said -
I was hoping it was a lie.
Thinking about what a friend had said,
I was hoping it was a lie.

Well I dreamed I saw the silver spaceships flying
In the yellow haze of the sun.
There were children crying and colors flying
All around the chosen ones.
All in a dream, all in a dream
The loading had begun;
Flying Mother Nature's silver seed
To a new home in the sun.
Flying Mother Nature's silver seed
To a new home...

I always thought this song is a true and beautiful hymn.
Indeed. It is an absolutely gorgeous song, and you can just read the lyrics by themselves as a poem. I've always thought of it as a warning to humanity to preserve the environment, lest we want to leave Earth to colonize another planet.

Yes, a dream, or even a myth. And so young when he wrote it. I admire him very much.
@Rambler: Yeah, I never really thought about that; he was so young. He and this song are sublime.

Love good ol Neil
Don't we all?! AND he hails from your home country, so that's even more to love! 😄 I also posted another one of your Canadian cousins earlier. The Band performing live, which is comparable even to this artful song.

There are few better than Neil.
Agreed. This masterpiece certainly serves as a testament to that.
