I Have Memories I Can Never Forget

In 1984 I was drafted in the army for what was then a year long compulsary military service. I was scared. I didn't have the faintest idea what the army life would be like and who I would be sharing this experience with.

I was sent first to Savona for my month long basic training camp. It's where we were given our army suits, our gear, our army boots, beret, badges etc.

I remember the first time I wore my army suit and put on my black beret with the metal badge on it. It felt incredible. Words defy me. I'm not a war crazy or delusional it's just wearing the army suit made me feel such respect towards my country and my parents.

It's the one single thing that gave me the MOST pride in all my life.
Not pride in war but pride in the discipline and in the flag.

This song will always remind me of my basic training before I was deployed in the North East Italy in a Heavy Field Artillery unit.
Back then we had what was a Comunist Yugoslavia on the other side of the border only a few miles away.

This may sound horrible.
I wish I wasba soldier in WW1 or WW2 that fell on the battle field. To be forever young.
