I Think Kids Should Still Learn Cursive Writing In School

Back when I was in school, we learned cursive writing first and used it exclusively during our primary school years. Clean and tidy handwriting was expected, and in fact you got a grade for handwriting on your report card.

Obviously we have computers and tablets and smartphones these days, so one might think that proper handwriting skills are not as important anymore. However, I feel that especially in schools, handwriting still has a place. Because unlike typing, handwriting focuses the mind on what is written. You have to think before beginning to write. There is no autocorrect, no copy and paste. Thus, as an exercise both physical and mental, it is a good way to train a mind to focus on the task at hand and as such, being able to write cursive is a valuable skill to have.

And yes, we should of course also teach proper typing skills. It's not one against the other. It's both together! Typing on electronic devices, handwriting on paper. :)
I agree, and as a father of a primary school pupil, I would like to add that learning handwriting improves fine motor skills and thus connects important synapses in the cerebrum. Both are enormously important for life, both as a child and later as an adult.

@AlienZipper It's part of a job I very much love, so I do my best to get on with it.

@Uncle Very good sir👌👍
Ohhh yes!! A good handwriting always comes in handy. Writing cursive helps with speed... I so agree with you!

Agree! Seems insane that kids don't learn that in some schools.

I agree. It also develops certain motor skills that typing does not. I teach mathematics, and I have found that my students today have a great deal of trouble drawing a smooth curve, compared to my students in the past.

@DrWatson And now imagine what it does to me as a language teacher! I actually do my best to train my students' handwriting. Luckily, as a private teacher, I can do that, still. But it would be a lot better if primary schools still did this properly.
