I Do Not Understand Racist People

My mom is getting racist, as she ages.

When I was a kid, she taught my brother and me to never judge a person by their race or nationality, to treat others as we want to be treated. But now?

All she does is complain about "Mexicans". Her racism seems focused on Hispanics, I guess because recently more and more Hispanic people have moved into her neighborhood lately. Yesterday she said she could hear their "loud thumping music" from next door, and she called it "disgusting". Then a week ago, we were talking about the city we are both moving to later this year, and she asked me "Are there a lot of Mexicans there?"

I'm so tired of hearing these comments, but I also don't want to argue with her all the time. I try to just ignore her comments and change the subject, but it bothers me that she has started thinking this way. :(

Presumably she has developed a Trump inspired intolerance to the folk from across the southern border - I can understand your concern

@Dlrannie yeah it's so strange!! Growing up, she was a staunch Democrat, but now she actually likes Trump. I can't understand it, it has to be some form of dementia beginning in her mind.

@DearAmbellina2113 I hope the move to a new city brings her back to the way of racial tolerance 🙂
