I Find Serial Killers Fascinating

Introducing Jim Jones... I have always found serial killers fascinating, but even more so the ones that manipulate others into doing the deed for them. Charles Manson is a popular example of this. He had a group of loyal hippies who would do anything for him. But Charles Manson is old news. I have stumbled across someone who was way more twisted and messed up than he ever was.

Introducing Jim Jones. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Jones) The man who led the world's largest mass-suicide. He convinced 900 people to kill themselves for him. How deranged must one man be to do something as heinous as this. The event is known as the Jonestown Massacre. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonestown) I find myself astonished at how little people actually know of this event. So do yourself a favor and read about it. Some of the material I've read about this still disturbs me.

To make a long story short; he founded a cult, named the Peoples temple (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peoples_Temple) , and convinced 900 people to hand over all their money and worldly possessions to him. In turn he took care of them and gave them a town, a supposed Utopia, to live in. This town was called Jonestown. It was located in northwestern Guyana, surrounded by jungle on all sides. The people were completely cut off from society, they were to start their own society. Jim Jones was however, a very sick and paranoid man. He knew exactly what he was doing.

The authorities caught wind of him and sent a senator to visit Jonestown. Upon arrival a few people begged the senator to take them away from Jonestown. The following day when the people were to leave, Jim Jones convinced a few people to follow them and kill them all before they got on to the plane. He them called all his followers together and ceremoniously passed them kool-aid laced with cyanide. He then convinced them to drink it. The death tape, which is the recording of this final speech he gave them, is available to listen to online. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_tape)

He got the people to feed the cyanide to their kids first, because he knew that they would not want to live when their kids have already died. One by one, 900 men, women, and children drank this poison in thinking that they were going to a better place. All because Jim Jones didn't wanna go down alone. He was eventually shot in the head, because he was too cowardly to drink the poison himself. To go through the painful convulsions that he watched all his followers die from.

The pictures that were taken after the Jonestown Massacre are very disturbing. It sticks with you. I guess that's why I have always found serial killing and mass murders fascinating. Because they stay with you, haunt you.

I would say the most ironic part of the whole massacre was the sign that was hanging above the chair Jim Jones gave his final speech on. It was hung up when the Pavilion of Jonestown was first built. Written on it was :
Those Who Do Not Remember the Past Are Condemned to Repeat It
I think we should all think about that statement very carefully, as Jonestown itself is an example of a lesson in history that is not to be forgotten. Yet ask 10 people you know if they know about Jonestown, the chances are that half of them or even more wont know what you are talking about.
