If you owned a small business, would you wire the place with cameras AND microphones? (to check in on what your staff are saying)

Do you think some bosses do that?

If I had the money, I would. It's not so much that I wouldn't trust the employees, but sometimes an employer has to make a decision based on very little evidence. If I can preemptively set up a situation where I have as much evidence to base a decision on as possible, I want to do so.

For example, if I only had video cameras with no audio, and an employee says that a co-worker sexually harassed them verbally, I would have no proof of that on a non-audio camera. So I would have to make a decision knowing that I could be wrong.

If I decide to punish the employee and I'm wrong, I've punished an innocent employee and I've set up a precedent with the employees that would allow them to terrorize other co-workers by lying about sexual harassment. If I decide that the story is a lie and don't punish anyone and I'm wrong, then I've let a disgusting act happen without any justice and I've set up a precedent for employees to harass others because their boss won't do anything about it. Either way, there's a 50/50 chance that I'll make a decision with terrifying consequences.

So if there's a way to gather as much evidence as possible in order to make the right choices, then I absolutely would!

The company I work at started setting up cameras at the beginning of the year. With mic and all. I was like "guys, we probably should make everything GDPR compliant because that thing will hit us in May".

Of course I was ignored.

Guess which company has to take down every camera now?
