You give power to what you think about. If you foresee failure and it dawns on your mind, you're more likely to have that result as an outcome.
Granted we are never in total, complete control of any situation or its outcome because some factors that affect it are external. But we're still to a certain degree both directly and indirectly responsible for what comes our way.
