Yesterday listened to Jasper Sharp's superb commentary on Imamura's Palm d'or winning Ballad of Narayama, and he kept mentioning this one in such glowing terms. Supposedly it was expensive to make and didn't do well at the box office, thus causing the director to not be very productive during much of the 70's. One of those cases where appeal was lacking when there ought to have been.
