I Love Films

10 Essential German Films

1. Die Nibelungen - 5 hour silent film from Fritz Lang, sometimes i joke with the family after one of their prohrams end i say "So who's up for a 5 hour German silent film? It's so good even Hitler liked it!" Vut sefiously this is a great achievement regardless of who liked it.

2. The Blue Angel - Josef von Sternberg, classic tale of amour fou

3. Jud Suss - heinous Nazi propaganda film that's actually well made, chilling stuff.

now the rest will be from The New German Cinema

4. Yesterday Girl - debut feature from Alexander Kluge, great film, has that enchanting Blauen Himmel music

5. Aguirre, The Wrath of God - Werner Herzog's most famous film, exceptional stuff.

6. The American Friend - great stuff from Wim Wenders

7. The Chronicle of Anna Magdalena Bach - the only major film of Jean-Marie Straub i have, a pity, i need his stuff so badly! This is a wonderful film filled with the glorious music of the greatest composer ever.

8. World on a Wire - i choose this one from Fassbinder to highlight as i rarely talk about it, it's pretty damn good, the length of 2 movies, visual style with mirrors is something else, some of the prettiest ladies in all of Fassbinder appear here.

9. The Tin Drum - Volker Schlondorff's most famous work is a magestically crafted masterpiece.

10. Malina - Werner Schroeter's finest narrative film i've seen, it's fearless, extremely emotional and crazy, edited or something by Julianne Lorenz who's the President of the Fassbinder Foundation, Werner by the way appears briefly in World on a Wire.

Deutsche Kino, a wunderbar thing ........:)
