Led Zeppelin - Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You.

I was raised with the music of Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits, Fleetwood Mac etc... My father listened to their music and as a result I got frequent exposure to it. It was the first music I ever showed any interest in and it sparked my deep love for music. I still listen to many of the bands I grew up with, but some songs stick deeper... for longer. One such a song is Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You by Led Zeppelin.

Growing up, my parents were in a very unhappy marriage. My mother's psychosis and alcoholism was tearing the family apart. My father wanted so much to leave her, but he was determined to try and make it work,,, to 'stay together for the kids.' Time after time he would give her another chance - just to be let down again. He was miserable... until the day he came to realize that we would all be better off without her. It gave him the courage he needed in order to leave her.

I remember driving home with him the day he decided to leave her. He had discussed it with me beforehand... he used to confide in me. He was so excited. He played Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You at full volume all the way home, enthusiastically singing along. It was the happiest I had seen my father in years. And I guess that moment sort of just stuck. 'Till today; that song is one of empowerment and freedom to me. It will always serve as a reminder to me that a divorce isn't necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes the end of a relationship IS for the best.

Yes, sometimes a marriage cannot be fixed. It is broken beyond repair and, for the good of everyone, divorce is necessary.
