I Am Treated Like a Child

Not Sure Why

I feel like it's mostly my family thst does it. But my dad's always been the worst about it. He keeps trying to tell me what to do to help 'look after' me, but I think he might just a a little embarrassed.

Almost every week my dad tells me I need to 'dress normally' or 'get my hair cut short again'. But it's kind of annoying to be honest. The wat my dad wants me to dress is boring(So what if I have an Evee beany?) and my hair is hardly past my ears, so I don't see why my family keeps trying to tell me what to do.

I guess it's not so bad though. I mean, it at least shows they care right? Just wish they would let me be me. lol

Is my family weird at all? XD

Parents tend to think more in terms of how their offspring might be viewed by the rest of the world !
If you look neat and tidy it presents a facia of respectability.
That reflects well on you and them !
This is why teens get into 'trouble'.
In their desperation to show the world their idea of individuality, they often wear clothing or hairstyles that scream "Jesus, doesyourmomdressyoylikethat?" Or similar.
The other thing is about you coming into your own as an adult; a man; a grown son !
And the fact that, like it or not, your folks know they are slowly losing you to the world of "i'm old enough to make my own decisions and understand the consequences of them, pop !"

He's probably doing what his dad did to him and he disliked it just as much at the time!

As a parent it's hard not to try to influence offspring using our experiences. We certainly don't get it right all the time and maybe will try to be too influential rather than let them find their own way in life.

In many instances, we do it because we care!

I dunno whether its weird or not, will dad and your family get upset with you if you tell this to them...that you want to be you..have your own hair style and have your own fashion style...

If you don't want to be treated like a child, try behaving like a man.
@AnimatronicLick I do. I work, pay rent, buy my own food. I just don't do all the guns and mechanical stuff my brother does. >.>

@NeighFlowers Fair enough. I think they care, too. I have a 19 year old son. He's a fantastic person, but I created some tremendously unique opportunities for him as he approached adulthood that he didn't take advantage of. It was very challenging for me to let it be. I don't understand, but I do my best to appreciate that he's making his own decisions.

Parents can be awful at relating to their children. Too much life experience for some of us to sort through.

Be confident. Acknowledge him in that he's only trying to look out for you, but show him confidence in your own choices. You're young and don't know jack, but they've instilled you with the values to help you navigate life.

Sorry...I guess I got on a roll.
