This is a really complicated topic. The first thing to consider is that these are rates based off of averages, the next thing to consider is that most women pursue careers that pay less(child care, nursing, so on).
To really understand the pay gap you have to compare career to career, and experience with experience. There is indeed a bit of a gap for some career fields, but the issue is not as bad as people make it seem.
I think within our lifetime this gap statistic will disappear, it already is starting to.
