I Lack A Close Relationship With My Father

I will call my father today and wish him a Happy Father’s Day. I will do this because my mother raised me to have a sense of responsibility, not because he has ever been a real father to me.

I lived the majority of my life with him not in it at all. He got in touch, finally, about 3 or 4 years ago, now that he is old and very ill. I’m not sorry he did, because I got to meet my brothers, and have developed a great bond with one of them.

So I will call today, because I am the type of person who will do the right thing, even if he never was.

You are living by your conscience, and what feels right to you. Kudos for being your authentic self. I never knew my father. He left when I was a baby. It’s been a big gap in my life, so I think it’s good you now do this.

It will always be a big gap in my life as well, and nothing he could do or say now will make that any better. Like I told my mom, if getting in touch after all these years makes him feel better about himself, then good. He’s never going to make me feel any differently about him at this point regardless. @Carissimi

Too many do not seem to understand the importance of being there during childhood. And then too many seem to never forgive.

@sunrisehawk I try to be, but I don’t always succeed. I did call him though. He’s not doing very well these days.
