Do you have any unusual graduation traditions?

In Norway, the graduating students become "Russ" and get a red, blue or black uniform (depending on what they've been studying) that gives them free bus rides and discounts almost everywhere, and are expected to party like crazy.
If someone's Russ and DON'T go out drinking and partying like crazy, their parents will probably tell them to go out and get drunk lol.

Do you have any wacky graduation traditions where you're from?

Drinking is the best way to utterly ruin every party and celebration. If I was Russ in Norway, I'd show them how to really party, sans alcohol, like it should truly be done.

@NorthernRoses: Just about everything you can't enjoy while drinking. Lots of music, either on a stereo or with a live band, even concerts sometimes, lots of fighting because fighting is fun, various forms of mischief, my favorite of which is blowing up garbage cans with fireworks, joyriding in cars, gambling, playing billiards...a party is supposed to be fun, not retarded.

Ahh, it's quite sedate in England. They do they thing where they throw their hats in the air. Some people get very drunk, but most go out with their families.

@GlassDog: I've seen that on TV, I think! Is it like, those square hats, or is that in the US?
GlassDog · 41-45, M
@NorthernRoses: Yeah, those square topped ones. They're called mortar boards here. I work for a university so I get to see it happen every year. I've even been hit in the face a few times by flying hats!

I want to move to Norway.. not because of this tradition, haha, but because it's better than here in the UK.

One with the highest GPA among graduting students gets right to nail a plaque with his/her name written on it to a log called "Graduation Log". I don't know if it's common abroad but that's wht we have here.
It's been a very long time, but in high school there was a "Senior Ditch Day", a school day where everyone in the Senior grade cut class and went someplace together. In our case a bunch of us went down to the beach and had a picnic. What made ours unusual was that we convinced one of our favorite lay teachers to accompany us.

@bijouxbroussard: Oh no, that is so sweet! 💕 What a nice way to go out.
