Why is it that Target and Walmart are offering part-time Holiday help more than day cares will pay their teachers?

Average child care teacher pay is around $12/Hr while Target is offering $15/Hr this holiday season! Something seems wrong with this logic!
i have worked part time at target for 12 years...... believe me, they gonna make folks earn that money. if they keep you on after the holidays, you wont get many hours after that. they cut hours way back after the holidays. you can usually get 30 hrs or so during the holidays though, and more if you pick online orders.
@YourMomsSecretCrush I appreciate that those hired by Target and pretty much every place requires hard work. I'm not doubting that at all. But the fact that teachers...especially daycare teachers are grossly underpaid is my biggest complaint. As a result, much like MorbidCynic has suggested, many are leaving the business to take jobs elsewhere....and I don't blame them one bit. But then people complain about the quality of daycare providers and teachers....it's because they pay bottom of the barrel and get the same level of people as "teachers". It's a shame.
@FigNewton yep, they are definitely underpaid. they would have far less turnover if the money was better, for sure.
Because Target offers way less hours. They rarely give full time hours to their seasonal employees.

@FigNewton You are wrong on the lower pay grade than Walmart...Walmart pays $11 an hour and only part time hours (it might be higher in some remote areas but the $11ph is across the board). Walmart employees are getting screwed royally. I cannot speak for Target, but I do know Walmart because I worked there.
@indyjoe You may be right on Walmart as I only saw the sign at Target offering $15. And I agree they're being screwed as well at $11.

@FigNewton It's not just the $11...The few full timers they still have lost any raises they worked years to get because of the $11 change, the 10% employee discount was taken from them, hours for them were cut to from 8 to 18 hours a week, and employees are working several different department at once Walmart is getting more work for less pay...something they actually put in a press release. Sam Walton would be spinning in his grave if he could see what has become of his company.

Target and Walmart employees deal with more children.

@YourMomsSecretCrush You're a better man than I. I cannot be around unsupervised teenagers without reaching for my pistol.
@xixgun at this point, i just cant chance being on the other side of the bars. i dont like prison food, and i like my anus intact. LOL

@YourMomsSecretCrush The one thing that keeps many of us in line.
Costco where I live starts at $25 dollars an hour to work in their fulfillment department where Wal Mart is minimum wage and Early Childhood Educators get on average just over minimum wage. It does seem like a waste to go to school and earn a degree to make just more than a cashier I guess it's something you really have to do for the love of it because it's not something that will be financially viable.

I left child care because it’s not suitable to live off of even as a certified teacher.
@ChiyoSKL You're not the only one...it's sad.

supply and demand. Target & Walmart are finding it really hard to get shortterm help and have had to push up the pay they're offering. Childcare I assume isn't just looking for shortterm fillins, so is working a different segment of the labour market
