But they come from the Earth. However, meteors and so on land on the Earth all the time, yet the only materials permanently expelled from the Earth are a handful of probes, so yes, it must be getting bigger
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
Not for that reason as all the things that go into making a baby creature come from the planet already so it's a net sum zero. However the planet is getting heavier due to debris from space falling into the atmosphere. The Earth gains roughly 150,000 tons per year that way.

Well yes, but not because of living bodies adding to the mass of the Earth. Celestial bodies on the other hand, such as comets or asteroids, are gradually increasing the Earth's mass when they collide with it.

Interestingly, the atmosphere is actually losing mass. That is because the lightest elements such as hydrogen or helium are simply more buoyant than the gases that form air. These are being lost to space once they're high enough in the atmosphere.

Overall though, the effect of mass loss is massively outweighed by impact gains, so there is a net gain every year.🤓

Nah, because matter doesn't appear all out of nowhere.

the earth might be getting bigger, but not for that reason.
to get bigger, it would have to be from matter entering our atmosphere from outer space.
Does a room get smaller every time you paint it 🤔
@Zaphod42 technically

.. are you sure.. 🤔
pentacorn · F
@KingLionHeart yeah, it does, albeit only a very tiny bit each coat.
Zaphod42 · 46-50, M
@KingLionHeart Yep, unless you're striping the old paint before you repaint it anyway... lol

No. There is conservation of mass and energy. So the only was to change the mass of the Earth is to bring in objects from outside the atmosphere or remove objects from the planet beyond Earth's orbit.

So as things die and get buried, they eventually get recycled. Remember, any organic material is made from things that already exist on the planet.
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@HoraceGreenley And as objects fall to the planet from outside Earth's orbit, i.e., meteorites, the Earth gains mass.
Lackwittyname · 51-55, M
@HoraceGreenley What the hell, you’re not answering in meme or joke and providing a best answer
HoraceGreenley · 56-60, M
@Lackwittyname Once in a while I will surprise you. I have a degree in Biology, so I am educated in Chemistry and Physics too. So I actually know the answer to this question because it comes up in Physics when discussing Conservation of Mass and Energy.

Thanks for your compliment. I actually paid attention in class

And where did the material that those bodies are made out of come from? (It wasn’t outer space!)
Earth is not a closed syst...
I was going to talk about energy and mass balance and E=MC^2.. but I got bigger things to worry about.

Short answer..
dirt + water = food.
Food + water + baby = adult human.
Adult human + alcohol = adult human + more babies.
Adult human + food + age/“hold my beer” = dead human.
Dead human = dirt
So, no. Human mass is not generated
However, earth may be getting bigger due to cosmic activity and smaller due to mass to energy conversion.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
I feel stupid for not knowing the answer to this
Lackwittyname · 51-55, M
No just heavier
Groofydorkgerdo · 56-60, M
Not it's getting smaller, we are losing more matter in the form of gas(hydrogen)then we are receiving, (meteors astroid and such.)
Supesun · 56-60, M
Yep it’s almost twice as big now as it was on Monday. And while we’re in the subject wear do all the farts go ?
I don't think it works that way.
Due to technological achievements, in a way, our planet is getting smaller.

corpses are burn for the most or eaten by worms

@Khenpal1 eww!
Taliesin33 · 46-50, M
I'm pretty sure that's not how biomass breakdown works....
