What are some of your favorite historical photos?

If I had to choose a favorite, it would either be [i]Raising a Flag Over the Reichstag[/i] or the famous photograph of Chief Sitting Bull.

I've always liked this one. Can you imagine OH&S laws now, they'd have to wear harnesses and have insurance etc...

SW-User
@PissAndVinegar Yes! I can't remember if it was the Empire State Building or just another huge one, but in those days they would all walk around up there.

The older you get, the more of these images your mind collects.
Remember the guy who stood in front of the tanks in Tiananmen square in China ? back in '89.

Obama in the briefing room with Biden; Clinton and the military brass as the troops stormed Bin Laden's compound.

Lee Harvey Oswald assassination by jack Ruby.

Terazkha. The little girl who grew up in a Nazi concentration camp. i believe the photo is called 'Terazkha draws a picture of home'. Horribly haunting !

Phan Thi Kim Phuc. This is the name of the little Vietnamese girl seen running naked following survival of a napalm attack. I've seen photos of her since. she says she's had a happy life.

That photo of George W Bush at the kindergarten class having been given the news about 9/11.

The photo of President Carter in the Oval office having just been given the news that the attempted rescue of American hostages from Iran, Operation 'Eagle Claw' had ended in the loss of many and the capture of 52 for the next year !
America has struggled with Middle-Eastern understanding and to some degree, trust, ever since.

This last one is special to me.
I was 16 years old and had been selected by my English teacher as one of just 5 students to visit the offices of The Observer newspaper in London on that exact day. April 24 1980.

We were given the tour of the printing plant and and shown how pages were put together. Met the guys who created the metal typefaces needed for printing. Even had one of the guys re-create a football headline with the scores in reverse as Watford had been thrashed by Sunderland i think, that day !

THEN we hit the Newsdesk. And as our slightly hassled guide was explaining what happens when breaking news hits the newsdesk, There was uproar as that photo of Carter with his head in his hands sat at the desk in the oval office, came through over the wire !

I had just witnessed something that only maybe 50 people had seen worldwide !!!!

@PissAndVinegar Agreed. There's probably a lot more we'll remember later in the day.
That great photo of Bobby Moore and Edson Pele giving each other a hug at the 1970 World Cup.
The picture of the gas chamber wall at Auschwitz. Scratch marks all the way up it !
The Buddhist monk Thich quang Duc sitting in the middle of the street having set fire to himself. in Vietnam.
The 'Black Power' salute at the '68 Olympics.
'Earth rise'taken by William Anders from the surface of the moon.'68
loads.
MrWarfare94 · 26-30, M
@Picklebobble2 Ya there no gas chambers at auschwitz!
Andrew19EightyFive · 36-40, M
That was epic hey, the battle for Berlin...

Me? I've been interested lately in the Wyatt Earp story and the real people behind the story. Came across these photo's recently:

The real Frank McLaury (apparently he was shorter than portrayed in the 'Tombstone' film--maybe 5' 3'' irl)
Tom McLaury (also apparently shorter than portrayed in said film--perhaps 5' 5''--, but a little taller than his brother, Frank):
Billy Clanton (was 19 years old when he died, as opposed to then 33-year-old Church who played him in 'Tombstone' flim):
Ike Clanton, Billy Clanton's older brother:

Frank Stilwell:

Curly Bill Brocious:

Johnny Ringo (who seems irl to have been more likely to have committed suicide than to have been killed in a duel with Doc Holliday):

@MrWarfare94 Not saying it's right, but one can imagine the emotions and ideology involved in the Russian invasion of Germany after what the Wehrmacht had perpetrated in Russia. It seems like there was a justification for such actions in the Russian psyche because of the brutality of the Nazi regime.
MrWarfare94 · 26-30, M
@Andrew19EightyFive at this point I have to disagree. On the fact that yes there were atrocities done by germans and others on the ostfront, now I should come out and say that I'm a firm believer in National Socalism!!
Andrew19EightyFive · 36-40, M
@MrWarfare94 I seem to be confused as to what you mean. 🤔

Aberfan, Wales, autumn 1966. A mountainous slag heap began to slip due to excessive rain and raced down into the town engulfing a school killing 144 people, including 116 children.

Interesting choices.

Do you know that the Red Army soldiers who hoised the flag was wearing two watches, one at each wrist? The censors made sure that the photo was manipulated so that only one watch was being shown.
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
@PissAndVinegar The impression that the Red Army soldiers were plundering and stealing.

Of course that was a bit laughable considering they raped every German woman in sight.

@PissAndVinegar Yes, indeed. Since warfare started the loser's women were part of the spoils.
Rakbladsvalsen · 26-30, M
Raising a flag over the reichstag is a really good choice, Antony Beevors Stalingrad has tons of photos in it that you'd probably appreciate
Rakbladsvalsen · 26-30, M

Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@PissAndVinegar a lot of risks taken by the likes of Yeltzin (before he succumbed to his illness) and Mikhail Gorbachev. People tend to forget that.
