What are some of your favorite historical photos?

If I had to choose a favorite, it would either be Raising a Flag Over the Reichstag or the famous photograph of Chief Sitting Bull.

The older you get, the more of these images your mind collects.
Remember the guy who stood in front of the tanks in Tiananmen square in China ? back in '89.

Obama in the briefing room with Biden; Clinton and the military brass as the troops stormed Bin Laden's compound.

Lee Harvey Oswald assassination by jack Ruby.

Terazkha. The little girl who grew up in a Nazi concentration camp. i believe the photo is called 'Terazkha draws a picture of home'. Horribly haunting !

Phan Thi Kim Phuc. This is the name of the little Vietnamese girl seen running naked following survival of a napalm attack. I've seen photos of her since. she says she's had a happy life.

That photo of George W Bush at the kindergarten class having been given the news about 9/11.

The photo of President Carter in the Oval office having just been given the news that the attempted rescue of American hostages from Iran, Operation 'Eagle Claw' had ended in the loss of many and the capture of 52 for the next year !
America has struggled with Middle-Eastern understanding and to some degree, trust, ever since.

This last one is special to me.
I was 16 years old and had been selected by my English teacher as one of just 5 students to visit the offices of The Observer newspaper in London on that exact day. April 24 1980.

We were given the tour of the printing plant and and shown how pages were put together. Met the guys who created the metal typefaces needed for printing. Even had one of the guys re-create a football headline with the scores in reverse as Watford had been thrashed by Sunderland i think, that day !

THEN we hit the Newsdesk. And as our slightly hassled guide was explaining what happens when breaking news hits the newsdesk, There was uproar as that photo of Carter with his head in his hands sat at the desk in the oval office, came through over the wire !

I had just witnessed something that only maybe 50 people had seen worldwide !!!!

The picture of the gas chamber wall at Auschwitz. Scratch marks all the way up it !
The Buddhist monk Thich quang Duc sitting in the middle of the street having set fire to himself. in Vietnam.
The 'Black Power' salute at the '68 Olympics.
'Earth rise'taken by William Anders from the surface of the moon.'68
