I Lost A Family A Family Member

My father-in-law asked me to go through some pages he had written, do some editing, clean up the text. They are sort of memoirs, mostly vague, often incoherent stories about his past, his career, his family.

One anecdote he wrote, though, really got to me.

Robert, my father-in-law, had a brother, Dickey, who was about two years younger than he. One winter, Dickey got sick. Their parents called in the doctor and took Dickey to the hospital, where the boy died.

Robert wrote about driving along snowy roads out to the cemetery near the family's old homestead. He asked his father where Dickey was, and his father replied, "He's in a wooden box in the trunk." When they arrived at the cemetery, they met Robert's grandparents, and he was told to wait in the car. It was his first funeral.

Robert remembered that his father would often say for the rest of his life, "Doctors bury their mistakes." It was the only thing he would ever say about Dickey's death.

This story, coming as it did in the middle of Robert's random, meandering musings, just gutted me.
