If a friend tells you they need space, how long should be appropriate?

In this case she never said anything until days later. I gave her 2 to 3 days but it seems like that's still not enough. I've had friends before that dont require space. Hell, I know people who have friends that they communicate everyday and have done so for years on end. Why is it so much harder now?
