I Got The Cane In School 6 Of The Best

Most canings were administered in the headteachers' studies where we were either caned singly or with our fellow offenders.

Occassionally a large group would be caned. This was usually when teachers had made a concerted effort to catch smokers or there was a crackdown of lateness, uniform violations or some other petty rule.

In those cases, all those due to receive a caning would be assembled in the gym or the school hall. A few teachers would administer the canings. The number of teachers varied with the number of us to be caned.

We were all, boys and girls, caned in front of each other and our ages ranged from 11 to 18.

There must have been some really dodgy teachers about . You know, those that get off on the idea of punishment fetish. I'm glad I was at school when corporal "punishment" (ie fetish) was already long time banned

@autumngirl27 There were. The most obvious example is those schools where only boys were subject to CP. The teachers must have had some other way of keeping girls under control that they could have used with boys too. The fact that they chose to beat them instead is very strong evidence that they were just abusive perverts.

@Sharon I spent two years at one appalling co-ed secondary school where both boys and girls were caned in equal measure. With hindsight, I have no doubt the Principal and deputy were both abusive perverts who specifically enjoyed the chastisement of girls. . Your logic is usually impeccable, but I am not sure the caning of boys only in a mixed school is strong evidence of perversion. Social norms, and in some cases local authority and governance guidance also played a large part in this apparent discrimination.

@april50 Some LEAs banned using CP with girls but none required schools to beat boys. That was entirely the school's own decision. As I said, even if they were prohibited from using CP with girls, they could have chosen to treat both sexes equally by declining to use it with boys too so why didn't they. What other explanation fits the established facts?

Social norms don't really come into it as girls tended to receive CP at home just the same as boys.

Incidentally, when the European Court of Human Rights ruled that using CP in schools without the parent's consent infringed their rights, there was a suggestion that parents be given the right to expemt their own children from school CP. Headteachers (dishonestly in my opinion) claimed that would be unworkable as they could be faced with two children who had committed the same offence, in identical circumstances, with identical antecedanced, but they could only cane one of them. That was exactly the situation some schools had voluntarily set themselves up for by exempting girls. What's more, as the two groups (boys and girls) were approximately equal in size, that scenario had the greatest probability of occuring.

@autumngirl27 It makes one wonder about some American high schools that still allow the paddling of students.

@chrisCA They also seem to cope very well with parental opt-outs.
