@Codrin I agree. It was almost totally ineffective. All the smokers I knew at school carried on after being caned. Some of us were caned more than once for it, including both my sisters, my wife, and me.

@NortiusMaximus @Codrin That's right. I was caned a few times for smoking, including in 6th form. Most of the smokers I knew at school were. My husband was caned three times at his school for smoking.

@Codrin Same here. Being caught smoking was almost an automatic caning. Some teachers would turn a blind eye to 6th formers smoking if we were reasonably discreet about it but I was caned when I was seen smoking on the way to school.

@RadiantRuby Corporal punishment was banned in UK state (public) schools in 1986. This happened well before then. It didn't deter any of us from smoking.
