I Am Conflicted

I am a cheese aficionado, but I just watched this clip on YouTube and I feel compelled to quit all dairy. Watch the clip and let me know your thoughts.

I was raised on a dairy farm. Much of what the young lady demonstrates in the video is true, "BUT", as with most liberal ideologies ..... it's far from a fair portrayal.

There are millions of dairy cattle world wide, so it's not hard to find sickly cattle to photograph. I can tell you because I know, I watched tears run down my great grandfathers, my grandfathers, my fathers, and even my own cheeks at the loss of a fine dairy cow. They are not quite so inhumanely treated. The film doesn't show the all nighter trying to save a cow that has taken ill.

The cows in the video that are down, are not taken for slaughter.....no slaughter house takes animals that cannot walk under their own power....

When an animal is that sick, it is humanely dispatched and buried. That's the law.

Yes, some male calves are sold for veal, which is horrifically inhumane. Our farms did not, I've never touched it and will never. Most dairies do not raise veal........

Male calves are raised just like other beef cattle and frankly have a much desired meat at the 800 lb. range.

Yes the females are inseminated repeatedly to keep them producing milk....the calves are taken from the mother. The cows we have today produce far more milk than the calf could possible consume. Literally, the mother would suffer greatly from the overproduction of milk....

This is industrial meat and milk production....
No, it's not little calves playing the meadows.....

But it's not nearly as bad as portrayed in the video.

Thank you for sharing your experience. I did watch documentaries on the treatment of animals in these farms and it is heartbreaking how some treat animals like dirt. But I am sure there are reasonable farms such as the one you describe and its important to share that too so thank you!

There's quite a bit of difference between the family farms and corporate farms. Most of the abuses you see are from corporate farming.
It's quite a different thing when the animal that has taken sick and is dying .... is the 10th or 20th generation female that has been in your family for many decades. It's even more heartbreaking when her last calves were not females...and the lineage is being lost permanently. There were cows I bottle fed as babies when I was a very small child, they grew and I could ride them like a horse when I was a kid..............I can assure you, such were never mistreated in any form or fashion.

The militant left, would never want anyone to see the love and respect that takes place between such animals and man.....

I watched my father at milking time....simply open the gate and turn around and go back in the barn. The cows came to be milked on their own......and when they were done they returned on their own. He never had to chase one down, he could call any one of them and they would come straight to him.....

You won't see those images on youtube.

That is great to read. Wish the corporate farms treat the animals the way they have been treated in your farm. You are lucky to have these great memories :)

Heartbreaking! A gentleman here told me that farming practices used by corporate and family owned are different. The images show an industrial corporate farm. We only drink organic milk with free this and that and rarely a significant amount...

Heartrending I don't drink cows milk or eat meat but I'm not strict on dairy although I'm not a cheese fan. I guess if buying it's better to pay more from independent farms??
