I Am Writing a Book

Struggles of discovery writing. I got about 20,000 words written and because I changed my mind on a two characters I had to delete about 8,000 words (and counting) and rewrite. Benefit is at least I am getting better.

@aesedai6 How many words did you get done? Still on the first draft?
aesedai6 · 26-30, F
@IsaiahIMS 35000 before I had to take a break because of school. Yes first draft

@aesedai6 Here's my little nugget of advice on the first draft. Power through it. Just write. Don't stop to edit anything. When you stop to edit, you can ruin your flow which can harm your writing. Remember any typo, error, or bad plot line you make in the first draft can always be fixed. It is the first draft. If it is bad, that's ok. No one will see it but you. Even Hemingway said, "The first draft of anything is shit."

Also, here's a tip for writing while in school, try and taking time out of your day to write. It doesn't have to be a long time. Even if you just sat down and wrote non stop for 20 mins every day, you'd still get 800 words done a day, which will add up before you know it.

@IsaiahIMS Hmm I like that advice thank you

@aesedai6 Hey, anytime. It took me years to figure that stuff out. We write got to look out for each other. Also when you get the first draft it is vital that you do two things. First? Celebrate! You got the first draft done and now it is time to party! Second? Take a step back from it. Put the first draft away and don't look, or even think about it for about 8 or 9 weeks. Work on another book or some short stories at that time. You have got build distance between you and the novel. And the more distance you put between you and your work, the more clear you can look at it and see what you need to fix. If you edit right when you finish the first draft, you will miss clear things that need fixing.

@IsaiahIMS Seems so far away to think about finishing my first draft.

@aesedai6 Just keep it at it. It may be far away, but you don't have to take great strides. If baby steps are all you can do, then baby steps it is. This is not a race. If it takes you a year, or ten years to get the book done that's ok.
