I Don't Believe Soldiers Are Heroes

Soldiers are the least interesting serial killers. If you're about to lose your dignity by killing someone, at least make it impressive.

I think you are confusing three completely different entities. Soldiers protect, defend, and offer military assistance in a time of war. Serial killers murder people for the sick joy and perceived control over life and death. Mercenaries are hired to specifically kill people.

As for countries who force people to serve...that is a risky and not always positive use of their people. Some may resent their service and, therefore, act in a more self-serving or inappropriate way. This was experienced by the US and is one of the many reasons our citizens are no longer drafted into the military.

There are always going to be problems in any branch of the military.

Just my two cents.

@Pinkstarburst I understand where you are coming from, I obviously didn't state it well enough that my post goes to the ones who attack, not the ones who defend.
I'm against compulsory military service as well. In my opinion the ideal would be that an army would only be trained in case of emergency and nothing more.

@Pinkstarburst I know I'm going to be unpopular for picking this apart but isn't a serial killer just someone who has killed more than once? The people who get sick pleasure from it are just a subset of serial killers, which include soldiers, executioners, surgeons, abattoir workers, people involved in fatal car crashes, vets, pest control workers and - to be honest - most of us who have killed more than one insect.

I know this is a bit analytical and pedantic, but it feels like that kind of question where terms need to be defined, otherwise we're talking at cross purposes and there's no point continuing because all that's going to happen is that people will get angry about what isn't intended.
It’s a difficult discussion and one that brings out the passion in people from all sides.

I personally believe that the majority of soldiers serving in other countries are amazing people and would much rather be home with their families and not living in a war zone of any kind. Unfortunately, they are at the mercy of leaders who are greedy and cowardly and are trying to play power games.

I am a child of military parents and know the lingering turmoil a person has in living with the experience of war.
@uniglow My perception of a serial killer is one who kills and continues to kill for the sheer joy of the act and power they receive from it. Those professions you mentioned do not choose those professions just to murder someone. Just as a soldier does not (NORMALLY) choose to serve just to kill people.

@Pinkstarburst I think the word "serial killer" has such a negative connotation and thus this sounds like a criticism of soldiers. And I do agree with you that there's an emotional reaction which runs counter to a coldly logical one. Hopefully there's room for both reactions and for both sides to understand the other.

@Pinkstarburst I think that's it, yes. The term serial killer strictly means people who kill more than once, but we have chosen a sub-group to define and represent the supergroup. My first instinct about the term serial killer is the same as yours, by the way, but this question made me think about it more.
