Because it says in Deuteronomy 14:22-26 that we are to give ten percent of our income to God so that way he can bless us financially. Because ten percent belongs to him. When you don't, you're robbing God from blessing you.

@iamnikki If you don't have a job, then you don't have to worry about tithing. Because tithing comes from your income. When I was unemployed, I didn't give my tithes. But if you live on retirement or social security, then you have to give ten percent. That's what my parents do.
