I Am a Student

How do you not give up? I feel like im too slow or something. like how lond does it take for you to learn 5 pages of something? i can barely do it in one day. this year i head like 50 mental breakdowns and it doesnt stop... send.. help

Depends on what are these 5 pages about. If it's physics, chemistry or math, that would take a daamn long for me. No chance to learn it in one day. I could manage biology, history, art history...But 5 pages in a day doesn't sound very effective to me. I would forget much of it right after the exam. I have to study gradually in order to get information deeper.

In college, we had to memorize around 500-1000 pictures of artworks - who was the author, approximate date when it was created, sometimes additional information. Somehow, I was able to pass on the first try every time but I never tried to learn everything all at once. I had to create "layers" in my memory. I memorized few one week, had a pause and memorize few again.

I also used to write down everything I learned before the exam. And I relied on my visual memory - what my notes looked like. I visualized a page in my mind and it helped me to remember what was the content.

@CrazyMusicLover how many hours did you study a day?
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@notthebus About 4-5 hours in high school when I studied only a day before the exam. Maybe more, I don't remember it exactly. In college, it's more difficult because I prepared materials and studied and revised between doing other activities. That helps you to create associations, by the way. You remember that you learned this when you were doing also something else.
When I had final degree exams, I didn't do anything else than studying, sleeping and eating. So it could be around 10 - 11 hours. All day long.
I used to waking up thinking about it and falling asleep thinking about it. 😀

College can be a tough transition. You might want to pay a visit to Student Counseling Services.

@notthebus No shame in it. That’s why it’s there. What you’re experiencing is very common. Having someone to talk to could be very helpful.

baby steps. Read and re read a sentence until you're completely focused. Once you're on a focus roll it gets smoother. Time yourself to 15 minutes of complete focus everyday and then keep excercising that muscle and extending the time.

15 minutes is key for me. If I take long breaks from studying 15 minutes of focus practice will set me right again.

Don't try to learn everything at once. Read just the gist to begin with. Pay attention to the chapter objectives and learning outcomes, keep reviewing these.

@dark548 thank you

Approach your studies without any prior judgments about it... become curious about it

uhm prioritize, most importent things first and see how far you get

You're more than capable. Take some time off and do nothing. Try to deal with anything else in your life that is causing a distraction or is not allowing you to focus if there are any. Taking 3 months off while in college was the best thing ive ever done .
notthebus · 22-25, F
@Thetimetraveler how do you take 3 months off?
Thetimetraveler · 41-45, M
I was on my last year of pharmacy school doing a 3 month clinical rotatio. It was difficult times and I was going through serious depression. I talked to student affairs and they were very understanding and supportive. Graduated on time and made of the class I missed the summer after graduating

I would chunk your work. That's what I do. College is really hard. It's rough at the start. Also, look for the important details and focus on those over everything else. You don't have to read everything.
