The "rock in the pond" analogy

You stand at a pool of water's edge and decide to pick up a rock and throw it into the pond.

You are startled and upset to see that after throwing the rock in, you get splashed and all these ripples come out from the spot where you threw the rock and get your shoes wet.

Do you get upset because you got splashed and wet?

Or do you realize that the only control you have over this situation is to not throw the rock in the first place?

That's one of my favorite analogies, and it's a simple one. Actions have consequences. Yet some never learn not to throw rocks.

@AbbeyRhode Thank you. It's obviously an analogy that celebrates conservative values, especially taking responsibility for your actions.

@SumKindaMunster I love that it works both ways. Just as an unkind action can have far-reaching consequences, a kind action can spread from one to another, in lovely ripples of harmony.

Thank you for Best Answer. :)

Honestly? I go either way.

But what if I skip a stone? Barely skimming the surface, and hopefully it makes it to the other side of the pond without making too many waves 🤔🤭

@SW-User So that's the exception that proves the rule I guess.
