I Am a Teacher

I just took a glance at the 2019 PISA report. A really worrying conclusion is that students' ability to tell opinions from data is decreasing.

The country showing the biggest improvement is...China. More evidence of how the future looks like.

I agree as I help my wife in teaching college classes. We need to get rid of social media and smart phones for a start, at least not allow children to use wither until they are 18 - 21. It is addictive as alcohol or vaping.

@acpguy True. Parents neet to make a huge effort to read to their childen when they are little and encourage them to read themselves later.

I am personally very glad that smartphones did not exist when I was young.

In my country, a quarter of the 15 year olds are not able to understand the information provided in a text! One in four are functional illiterates! That is downright scary.

But not surprising.

@Mugin16 It does not happen by chance. Functional illiterates are much easier to manipulate.

@Cierzo I think that is more the result of all young people having smartphones and spending far more time watching videos online and gaming than they read books - if they read at all. About half of the 15 year old students said they do not read for pleasure. Thus they only read when they are forced to do so in school.

The other reason is of course the one we have previously discussed.

@Stereoguy I am glad for the humane principles my schools always had.

That made them as good as they were.

They were "liberal" principles.

@Stereoguy I think Sweetnessandshadows is a bit unhinged and is not in contact with reality. Definitely a liberal that has been brainwashed. It would be interesting to know it's age.
