I Am a Teacher

When my student visited me yesterday and I told her that I observe that it is often the quiet ones who remember their teachers, she gave a self deprecating laugh and said 'yes, I'm a little weird'. I love this girl. She used to be so quiet but she has grown up so well and confident in her own way. Now a teacher herself, she came up to see me on her own accord after learning that I just had an operation. I made a half-boiled egg and kaya toast breakfast. She ate as I recounted the years we spent together. Among the girls who loved being with friends, she always seemed a little in her own world. Not one to have many words, I had written in her report book in one year that she needed to 'develop more confidence'. And lo and behold, how she has grown. Not only did she take the initiative to visit, she offered to drive me somewhere if I could make the trip. I felt warm inside.
Probably the others are busy with their own lives. 'The brilliant ones' she quipped are 'used to living life at that kind of pace'. How true. A number of her peers are married and caught up in making a living themselves. She herself devotes her time to church.

Before she left, I lent her the book 'Quiet' by Susan Cain. I hope she never loses what is so special about her. And to continue in her work as a teacher to help the quiet and weird ones to find their own voice.

Sounds like the kind of girl I鈥檓 always drawn to. But I鈥檓 too quite myself so nothing ever comes from it lol

@SW-User don't get discouraged. The quiet weird ones will find each other 馃槉.

You have left an impression in some of your former students. This is the best gift a teacher can get.

@Cierzo I told her I taught that high-readiness class in my third year of teaching. And I wonder if I did more damage by not having the experience of an older teacher. It is liberating to do a confession like that with a student knowing that she will not judge.

..I was a quiet one in school. I remember my teachers very well and visit some of them every now and then.

i read that book. i thought it was OK. Heavily based on american culture
novembermoon51-55
@NiftyWhite I agree with a large portion of it. One aspect that the author mentioned is the emphasis on group work. Here in Asia, there is also heavy focus on collaborative learning. I'm not against it. But really, it is hard for introverts to have to put up with insensitive ones who don't value quality input. That's just my take on it.

People care about you, you must have been a very nice person to people :)

@Sssslm haha I think I relate better with my students. Adults are too complicated. I must admit I make up my mind quite quickly about people, whether I like them or not. I find it hard to make friends among colleagues.

@sspec I taught her for two years, starting when she was 11 years old. I guess at that age kids are absorbing all they can about the world and trying to make sense of their place in it. She was a self-directed student, not the over-achiever type but conscientious. I liked that she did not belong to any cliques but moved around on her own much. I like that independence and 'not of this world' kind of attitude.
