I Like to Debate

Somewhere I have (or my mother has) an old school report from when I was 11 or 12 that includes the observation that I "will start an argument in an empty room." I don't think this has changed very much.

I think very few things should be accepted at face-value without testing the assumptions in the position. Therefore, virtually anything should be up for discussion (though there's a time and a place for everything). And my tendency is to take the opposite position from that taken by whomever I'm talking to (even if in reality I agree with them), partly because I'm perverse but also because it's only through reason and debate that we can arrive at a sure understanding of an issue.

I think that debating is pretty much inherent to human existence. And 'Love thy neighbour', whether or not you're Christian, is a pretty decent value to live by - but 'loving' I think has to include at least trying to walk a mile in someone else's shoes: what better way to do this than to discuss what is important to them?

More than anything, however - and this is where I tend to fall short of my own ideals - debating is at least as much about listening as talking. Modern life whether it's involving politics or social issues or anything else, seems to be mostly talking and not so much listening. We'd all benefit if we tried it a little more often.

I disagree, everything should be taken at face vale, and leaders should make decisions for the population. An obedient society that doesn't question or debate every issue functions more effectively.

debate, civil discourse, is one of out great tools to widen what we know, and learn from each other,

I grew up in a home where debate, with reason, and evidence, was a family activity. and years later, it still is, with the next generations.

love thy neighbor, is too much for most folk,, so i suggest
Tolerate thy neighbor. a bit easier, and you dont have to even LIKE someone to support thier right to exist.

i am however, often intolerrant of the intolerant

I agree completely. Nothing should be beyond debate! My teachers say I could start an argument with myself. Debate is good, but I need to learn to control my temper and not let my passion spill over into rudeness. I was in trouble quite a lot for that last term 🙄

@SW-User It's easy to let passions get the better of you! I think while everything should be up for debate, there are usually times when it's not appropriate just then

@Murmurs I got three detentions in one week for arguing with the referee in netball, hockey and rugby (one detention for each). I now know that it really is not a good idea to debate while your adrenaline is high!

Not being a Christian myself, but being married to one. I can agree to love(like) thy neighbour way of living. It's definitely opened my eyes to how I can listen, and not pre judge a person. Makes for a more relaxed harmonious life( for me)

i agree 100%, we should build ourselves strongly. and to be strong we must test and push limits. trial by fire.
