Verbal abuse indicates lack of respect (he doesn't respect you.) It will be a LOT of work to turn this around, if it can be turned around.

You might be ahead to cut your losses and not fall into the trap of thinking you can change him. He's the only one who can change himself...and he has to want to.

Don’t waste your time. Warn him once. If he ignores you, walk away. It can escalate to physical easily.

That sounds potentially dangerous and it must be VERY frustrating...🥺
